Antique Art&Crafts FiligreeGoldFill ScrollingTwisted DanglingHearts Shell Brooch

About the Item

Epitomizing the organic subjects and hand-craftsmanship spanning the Arts-&-Crafts to Art-Nouveau movements that were led in The United States by Louis Comfort Tiffany, this gifted or commissioned brooch by an artist in the late 19th Century features a pale seashell within a contrasting single elaborately scrolling, twisted and undulating gold-filled wire, which cleverly also functions as a pin for c-clasp fastening. The filigree is further decorated with three gold heart-charms dangling from S-hooks. Each textured heart is hand-hammered with a dotted border and different script initial. Among the twisted wire at the top, the brooch is crowned with three faux-stone enameled/glass beads in colors of turquoise, red coral, and white chalcedony. These elements stress the inherent beauty of the materials and flowing shapes, as much as the mature style of the unknown artist. We believe that this was made by an American as it was acquired in California and is less ornate than British jewelry at the beginning of the Arts & Crafts movement. If this may not be handmade by Louis Comfort Tiffany, it could be by an artist who influenced him before he transitioned from using stained glass and found pebbles in his decorative designs to Tiffany & Co gems by 1902.
