Antique Double Owl Brooch Pin in 14K Gold
About the Item
Absolutely charming, this pair of inquisitive gold Owls is a wonderful antique brooch and also works as a chain connector; it could also be converted into a beautiful necklace. A colleague of mine referred to them as “a Night Owl and Daytime Owl.”
Crafted of gold testing at 14K, the brooch pin features a pair of stylized Owls with ruby eyes and great detailing, which extends to the woven eternity knot that brings even more texture to the piece. Dating to the late Victorian - Art Nouveau period, the brooch retains its original pin and textured clasp on the reverse.
Each owl head measures just under half an inch (11.4 mm), with 1.5 mm ruby cabochons set as glowing eyes. Very well detailed, the Owls remain in excellent antique condition. (One owl head has more high karat blooming on its surface – likely the “Day Owl”)
The woven portion of the pin is also in excellent condition with no damage or repairs. The total width of the eternity knot is just under 2 inches or approximately 48.5 mm.
On the back, the original pin stem and clasp operate well. I love the texture given to the clasp, which is also more secure than many clasps, given its design. (it also protects one from unexpected pokes) On my scale, the finished weight of the piece is a nice 7.07 grams.
A little discoloration is present, along with the possible loss of some of the bloomed finish - otherwise it's in fantastic condition, especially considering its age.
