Antique Edwardian 15K Gold & Silver 1.72ctw Diamond Pearl Halley’s Comet Brooch

About the Item

An Edwardian diamond, pearl, silver, and yellow gold brooch, comprising twenty-two old European cut diamonds, six rose cut diamonds, and fourteen seed pearls, set in silver, backed in 15 karat yellow gold, with 15 karat yellow gold pin and fittings. I believe this brooch to be a Halley’s comet brooch. Halley’s comet is a comet which is visible from the earth every 75-79 years. As it is such a rarity to see this comet, throughout history, jewellery designed to resemble the comet has been made to commemorate its passing through the sky. These jewels are characterised by a tapered design, often with a cluster of gemstones to one end, like this brooch. Very popular in the Georgian era and into the Victorian era, it is quite unusual to see one from 1910. This brooch is designed as a cluster of 3 shimmering seed pearls, attached to 3 diamond-set leaf shaped sections, creating the ‘coma’ of the comet. From here, seven curved, knife-edge bars branch out, creating the ‘tail’ of the comet. The knife-edge bars are alternately set, the first mostly plain, with diamond set leaf-shaped section at the terminal, the next, set alternately with bezel set old cut diamonds and seed pearls, and so on. The seed pearls are pale, creamy, and lustrous, with the most beautiful shimmer, and are -well-matched with one another. The diamonds are bright, white, sparkly, and well-matched with one another, with the rose cut diamonds adding a darker glitter. The knife-edge bars and diamond settings are adorned with millegrain details, a favourite of the Edwardian era. The brooch is complete with a yellow gold pin, and C-shaped clasp. The brooch is in excellent condition, the pearls exhibit little to no wear, and the largest diamond has a surface reaching inclusion. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
