AntiqueArtNouveau 1920s RedPouredGlass Czech Neiger BrassFiligree Dangle Brooch
About the Item
In the 1920s in an Art-Nouveau style, Czech costume-jewelry designer Max Neiger created this brass dangle brooch that features three different shapes of either bezel-or-prong set red glass for a wide variety of rich and bright reflections. Aside from his elegant work arranging colorful glass, Max's complex gilded-metal filagree designs are recognizable without signatures for their exceptional craftsmanship that was outsourced to metalsmith estamperies rather than factory stamped. Some of these high-quality designs were figural or included exotic motifs that referenced Egyptian, Chinese or Indian cultures.
Max worked with his business-minded brother Norbert at the Neiger Brothers factory in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia, from around 1905 through the 1930s. Unfortunately, the Jewish duo perished after being war-displaced to continue their work in Bohemia. After being arrested in Prague, they were murdered in 1942 by the Nazis at the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp.
While they enjoyed international fame in the 1920s with many orders from The States and Europe, a Vogue feature about their work nearly a decade ago resulted in resurgent demand for their pieces, which are more rare than their glass-specialized jewelry-designer peers, such as Alfred Philippe who had a long career at Trifari.

- 16thCentury Renaissance SilverRepousse Romantic Engagement Pendant Or HatBadgeLocated in Chicago, ILThis early-16th-Century Renaissance period silver-repousse round medallion pendant features a romantic encounter in a rural landscape between a man and smiling woman wearing European-nobility fashion, including a men's feathered hat, tights and sword. A silversmith was commissioned by this unknown man to make the pendant as a hat badge to promote his affectionate nature, which is conveyed by the welcomed gestures between the adult couple, who stand cheek-to-cheek and hand-in-hand. As there is a church in the distant landscape, this may have been his wedding-engagement announcement. It is worth noting that romantic love via marriage was a rarity before the 18th Century. The tragic romantic Italian legend of Romeo and Juliet was first translated into English for publication in 1562--several decades before Shakespeare turned it into a famous play about a deadly consequence of separating lovers. The pendant medallion is framed with a filigree-like inward-curving bezel and a flat metal backplate, while its bail enables it to be pinned as a brooch or strung on a necklace. A perfect engagement or wedding gift for a man or woman who loves antique...Category

- Swedish 1962 Tennesmed SterlingSilver RedPouredGlass Geometric Stigbert BroochBy Rune TennesmedLocated in Chicago, ILMade in 1962 by Swedish Rune Tennesmed, this modern minimal sterling silver geometric brooch features a faux ruby poured-glass red cabochon, concave sheet metal, and openwork that forms two corners of the two-tier triangular brooch. This simple abstract design is characteristic of the rounded geometric shapes that framed his silvery pieces, while his early work sometimes included a pop of brightly colored glass. Tennesmed (1929-2011) was a 20th-century studio metalsmith, who changed his given name Carlsson to reflect his craft and his business name, which means "pewtersmith" in Swedish. This unusually elegant and sleek piece was made for Scandinavian Atelie Stigbert, which was recognized for producing modern jewelry designs in sterling silver and gold. The brooch was likely commissioned by the Stigbert workshop founder Stig Engelbert who died in 1962, before his artisan sons evolved the family business to be known as Engelbert. Recognized as one of the most significant and popular Scandinavian artists of the mid-20th century, Tennesmed revived ancient Viking...Category
