A Victorian diamond set partridge brooch, set throughout with old brilliant-cut and rose-cut diamonds, estimated to weigh a total of 1 carat, with a ruby set to the eye, silver set to a gold mount with a brooch pin fitting, circa 1890, measuring approximately 3.2 x 1cm, gross weight 7.55 grams.
This fine Victorian brooch comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. During the late-Victorian era, men’s jewellery featured an array of motifs related to hobbies or professions. This brooch was most likely worn as a reference to partridge hunting, a popular sporting pastime during the nineteenth century. The body of the partridge set with lively and glittering diamonds. The eye of the partridge is a vivid cabochon ruby. The partridge’s legs have been meticulously rendered, featuring wonderful detail. This brooch is a lovely and expressive piece.
This antique brooch is in fine condition for its age. Unmarked, tested as 14ct gold and silver, with 9ct gold pin.
