Antique Victorian 15K Yellow Gold Turquoise and Pearl Swallow Cloak Pin
About the Item
A Victorian turquoise, pearl, and yellow gold pair of pins, comprising twelve round half seed pearls, and twelve round turquoise cabochons, set in 15 karat yellow gold, with 15 karat yellow gold pin and fittings.
This striking Victorian cloak pin is comprised of two gem set swallows pins, linked with a chain, which would have been used to pin the 2 sides of a cloak together, across the front, to prevent your cloak from slipping. The swooping swallows are set respectively with shimmering seed pearls, and vibrant turquoise cabochons. The seed pearls are pale, shimmering, and lustrous, and are well-matched with one another. The turquoise cabochons are a bright vibrant aqua and are well-matched with one another. The pair of swallows are linked with a yellow gold chain and are each complete with a yellow gold pin. The cloak pin is in excellent condition. Wear and tear acquiescent with age.
Whilst most people don’t own a cloak these days (a very unusual pieces of jewellery, which I do not come across very often), there are so many ways this piece of jewellery can be worn; as a statement brooch across the front of clothing, as a fastener, to keep the 2 ends of a scarf in place, across an elegant up do, or even as a pair of lapel pins. In the Victorian era, swallows symbolised loyalty, devotion, and the return of a loved one.
Each swallow measures 19.7mm long, 20mm wide, and 3.5mm deep (excluding pin and fittings). The chain measures 117mm long, giving a total length of for the piece of 156mm (15.5cm).
