Victorian Snake Gold Brooch Pendant, 1890
About the Item
Features a snake winding up. The red Ruby with tiny old cut Diamonds on its head. Even the eyes of the snake are present.
There are special holes under the head for the snake so it can be worn on a chain or a cord, like a pendant.
Once it was common to communicate a message via pin or brooch. Nowadays this art is lost, but we can surely start a new tradition. Former secretary of state Madeleine Albright published a fascinating book “Read My Pins” - a story and celebration of how one woman’s jewelry collection was used to make diplomatic history. Even the position of the brooch was once important, eg facing up or down would have a different meaning.
