Late 18th Century Catalan Gold and Amethyst Pendant Earrings

About the Item

Imposing, rare and original pair of antique bridal long pendant Earrings crafted in Catalonia (Spain) between 1790 and 1820. Known within Catalonia as les arracades d’arengada “the herring Earrings": the elongated piscine forms of the decorative elements, and of the Earrings as a whole, is said to have been inspired by the shape of herring fish. These exquisite pieces of jewelry are articulated: the central component, with its tipped wing spread, is adapted from the shape of butterflies. The arracades d’arengada were deliberately crafted with detachable elements, allowing the pendants to be arranged as shorter “day” or longer “night” versions. These Earrings were made longer depending on the importance of the occasion or social event. The design philosophy behind the changeable length was its size could grow with the girl-woman as she developed in body and life experiences. The herring Earrings were marriage tokens: a woman was given one as a sign of promise; wearing both earrings at full length indicated she was married . Set in 18 karat Yellow Gold with a glittering array of natural mixed-cut deep purple foiled Amethysts, these delicate pendant Earrings come with the original ear hooks still intact. 9.5 cm long and 3 cm large Total weight: 43 grams Gift wrapping available. In case of return of the item, customer will be charged for the return and any custom/tax duties that come with it
