An attempt to “poeticize science” is the best way to describe these earrings. They trace their inspiration to the observation of the deep-green lotus leaves floating on a pool within the temple complex of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. As the leaves moved, tiny water droplets bounced around on their hydro-repellent surface and gathered into nearly perfectly spherical-shaped bigger drops of various sizes. Experimenting further, by pouring honey, a more viscous liquid, onto a lotus leaf, even stranger, more elaborately sinuous and endlessly morphing domed shapes appear. The phenomenon, known as the Lotus Effect, not only provided the name of the new set of jewelry, Lotus & Honey, but also inspired its forms. The meandering, metallic elements appear to flow gracefully like liquid, creating an effortless impression of mellifluous movement. Interspersed are gemstones that sparkle like water droplets dancing in the midday sun. As always, each piece is handmade in Milan to the highest level of craftsmanship with a spellbindingly meticulous attention-to-detail. The earrings are lithely articulated thanks to intricate, quasi-invisible hinges, while the gemstones are set in an innovative cross between a prong and a bezel, with a dome-shaped back that readily evokes beads of liquid. Rhodium-plated silver was used for a maximum water-like translucency and the revolutionary lab-grown gem called Diamond2 out of ethical and ecological concerns. As beautiful as real diamonds, they eschews the issues associated with mining them, such as damage to the environment and political violence. The pairing of silver and diamonds is a nod to jewelry tradition. The combination, which may appear unusual nowadays, was very common in the first part of the 19th century. White gold had not been invented and platinum was not used for jewelry. So, if you wanted to prevent the beauty of precious stones being diminished in the yellow glow of the candles, silver with its bright white color was the only option. For pierced ears.
