This rare and outstanding example of an Art Deco era flapper necklace was most likely created in France. Condition Report: Excellent - The necklace has been professionally re-strung. The Details... This necklace features round pink glass beads and round and tubular shaped black glass beads. They are interspersed with rondelle, round and bicone shaped beads detailed with claw set, colourless rhinestones in their entirety. The necklace culminates in several tassels suspended from the necklace in a pendant form. The necklace fastens with a barrel clasp detailed with small, round colourless rhinestones. This necklace measures 70cm in length. The pendant measures 10cm x 3cm. A Short History... Glass has been a prevalent feature of costume pieces since the invention of jewellery. An easily accessible material that can be formed into any shape and dyed any colour. Glass was heavily used in Art Deco pieces, such as this necklace, because it could be dyed in a vast array of colours to meet the need for affordable jewellery after the Great Depression and First World War. Costume jewellers of the Art Deco era favoured detailing their beaded necklaces with rhinestones. It was a way to add glamour and sparkle to an otherwise plain design.
