Victorian Aesthetic Movement Sterling Silver Bird Locket
About the Item
Antique Victorian sterling silver locket dated 1876. This extraordinary silver locket is hallmarked for Birmingham and made by Horace Woodward & Co. The front depicts a Japonesque-style scene, a heron in the centre of the piece standing among bulrushes. In Japanese culture, this bird represents a noble and graceful appearance. Herons are considered to be a symbol of divinity as well.
This is a typical aesthetic movement motif, and this beautiful locket is a lovely example of its period. This exquisite locket has delicate engraved detail, and it presents beautifully when worn. It opens to reveal two picture compartments.

- Victorian Sterling Silver 'Amity Eternity Infinity' LocketLocated in Brisbane City, QLDA wonderfully large sterling silver Victorian locket with an elaborate 'Amity, Eternity, Infinity' monogram to the centre front. The oval highly polished locket hangs from a tapering but large bale which allows either a large chain or bolt ring clasp to slide through with ease. To the front of the piece is an elaborate 'AEI' monogram which has been applied over the top of the locket, however is original to the piece. This monogram is often seen in Victorian jewellery and stands for 'Amity, Eternity & Infinity'. The firmly closing locket features two windows inside with glass to place a photograph or lock of hair behind. The piece dates to circa 1890 and due to the lack of hallmarks is unlikely to be English, but perhaps American in origin. A gorgeous example of Victorian era silver jewellery which is still so wearable today.
