Here we have a marvellous creation taken from the Victorian period. This antique piece has been crafted from a rich 18ct yellow gold into the form of a watch key; a tool used as a mechanical winder on any spring driven device. However, this particular striking design instantaneously reveals its one-of-a-kind nature. The rounded shape plays host to the expertly handcrafted curvaceous foliage within with the foldable key mechanism being somewhat uncommon of the period. This unique and rare find was created by Jules Wièse, who is widely regarded as one of the finest goldsmiths of the 19th Century with many examples of his work being found in major museums worldwide including the British Museum and Mesée des Arts Déconratifs in Paris. Wièse possesses a significant and widely appreciative audience, including peers and judges, who awareed him a First Class medal for his work, commending him on his "excellence as a modeller and inventor". On seeing his display stand, Wièse contemporary M. Magne wrote that he was a "fine goldsmith and jeweller with an already distinguished reputation... the importance of his pieces and brave experiments reveals, even in the most modest work, an awareness of art and beauty which deserves to be encouraged...".
