Castellani Ancient 7th Century Carnelian Intaglio 18kt Gold Ring

About the Item

The 7th century Roman intaglio is set into the Castellani® Artemis designed ring. The intaglio is set under the bezel, as jewellers did intaglio and cameo rings 2000 years ago. The gold braid is pronounced and raised from the inside of the bright polished frame. The subject is an aristocrat of Ancient Roman society. The intaglio is detailed and the profile including the hair, beard, face is quite defined. The outline of the ring is 21mm Front to Back 18mm Across 4mm Height (7/8” Front to Back ¾” Across 3/16” Height). The Castellani and Double C logo plates are affixed to the inside gallery of the ring. Castellani’s Jewellery from the 19th Century is in museums: British Museum; Victoria & Albert Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum to name a few); exhibitions as well as in private collections. Fortunato Pio Castellani can be called the "Father of Archeological Revival Jewellery". In the mid 1800's in Rome, Castellani had the entree to visit the Ancient Etruscan ruins. He was able to study these Ancient designs as well as other Ancient Mediterranean civilizations’ jewellery and started to create and re-design under his brand.

  • Castellani Ancient Roman Agate Intaglio Gold Ring
    By Castellani
    Located in New York, NY
Castellani® has selected this Ancient Roman Agate Intaglio for the "Cleopatra" Ring Setting. The intaglio dates to the 3rd to 7th Century. The intaglio is both black and white agate, which is a hard stone and very good for carving. The agate has two layers of color, black on the top and white at the bottom. The agate intaglio is solid and is one piece. The carver was able to use these two color layers to give dimension and detail. The Column and Angel on the left wings are white and the balance is all black. The Carver knew the material he/she was carving and used this to create this very unique scene. The intaglio shows two angels standing on either side of a column/pillar looking at the bust of a man on top of the pillar. The angels are female and male. The bust on the pedestal is of a male. The intaglio is set below the frame. The frame flairs out to a subtle point on the sides and has a flat surface. The "Cleopatra" ring design was a style that Castellani created in the 1860's and was inspired by Ancient Roman rings...
