William IV Sterling Silver Pepperette by William Bateman II

About the Item

This very simple William IV pepperette was crafted by William Bateman II from sterling silver. The piece has a period crest to centre front of a dragon which likely dates to the time of manufacture. Crafted from sterling silver the piece has hallmarks for London, 1835, and a maker's mark for William Bateman II, great-grandson of the famous female silversmith, Hester Bateman. William Bateman II was the last member of the Bateman silversmithing dynasty, creating pieces right through to the early Victorian period. The pepperette is very simple with virtually no ornamentation, however has a ridged tapering body. The lid to the pepperette fits well, is secure and also has matched hallmarks to the base. Elegant in its simplicity, this pepperette is a departure from the typically hand chased and repousse silver the Bateman family are known for. Marked - London hallmarks for 1835 & maker's mark for William Bateman II Total weight of piece - 116 grams Measures - 14cm H
