STUYVESANT

Country House by Arthur's in Stuyvesant, NY

The entire ethos for this project came from two very mundane inputs: the first was an original wide-plank floor painted a deep hunter green that both us and the client desperately wished to keep, and the second was the fact that the original owner of this small 19th century farmhouse nestled along the banks of the Hudson River would reportedly pay the local masons he employed through the living room window of the home every Friday, with the workers lining up single file to receive their wages in simple paper bags. Although we were originally tasked with designing the kitchen, the client likes these ideas so much that we end up designing the whole project. We drew heavily on the work of the Barbizon School of Painting, Alexander Girard and Folk Art to inform our designs and created custom pine daybeds for the living room.

After 3 long years due to pandemic-related delays, the project is finally finished. Our contractor Chad texts us that the home is so warm and chill and inviting that it makes him want to kick up his feet and take a nap every time he’s in it. For us this is the highest compliment.
