About the Item

School of Paris, Ecole de Paris, artist Bill Parker was born in Josephine, Texas in 1922. Early in his career, Parker worked with Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) and under Fred Hocks (1886-1978) at the Fine Art School of San Francisco. Working in Paris from a United States government grant in 1951, Parker's one man shows were held initially at Kaganovitch Gallery. While in Paris, the artist attended the famous Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and developed a friendship with Fernand Leger (1881-1955). It is noted while at the Grande Chaumiere, Parker was discovered by art dealer Max Kaganovitch (1891-1978). The dealer encouraged the young artist to enter a prestigious competition with 350 other painters - the Priz de Buhrle. During this period, Parker soon developed into one of the leading American artists in Paris. The American artist participated in the School of Paris exhibitions and shows at the Galerie Charpentier as well as the revolutionary Salon de Mai. (The phrase "School of Paris" describes the indication and importance of Paris to be known as a center of Western art in the 20th century). Members of the School of Paris may be divided into two areas: the first, a group of artists in Paris before World War I (whose creative force lay in the styles of Post-Impressionism, Cubism and Fauvism). After World War II, the term "School of Paris" was often referred to as Lyrical Abstraction (the European equivalent of American abstract expressionism and artists related to Cobra). As a participant in Ecole de Paris exhibitions at Galerie Charpentier, Parker joined other artists in later shows at the Salon de Mai and others throughout Europe and the United States, including: Cinq Americains de Europe (Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, 1955), Trois Peintres (Marlborough Gallery, London, 1956), Expo Internationale des Peinture (Moscow, 1957) and The International Exhibition (Maine, USA, 1963). Works by Bill Parker may be included in the collections of the following: the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Georgie Museum of Modern Art, Athens; Musee Bordeaux; Moscow Museum of Modern Art; Whitney Museum, New York. Bill Parker was a master of Abstract Expressionism (called Abstraction Lyrique in France) as seen in "Still Life with Compote". The mix of warm and cool colors with the stylized compote reflect Parker's admiration of forms and shapes. Strong brushstrokes with texture enliven the canvas as traces of outlining are seen throughout.
