Jacques Payette
Derrière, le passé intouchable

2014

About the Item

In considering the work of Jacques Payette in its entirety from the beginning until today, one realizes an immediate desire for proximity. The close-ups, repoussoir backgrounds and open framing are all ways of abolishing the distance between subject and viewer. However, this proximity is effected in ways other than the spatial construction of the painting. It also seeps into the awareness of the impact that ties the viewer to the subject, through an intercepted gaze, watching over a sleeping child or sharing a waking dream. A self-taught artist, Jacques Payette was born in Montreal in 1951 and began exhibiting his works in the early 1970s. Since 1990 he has worked primarily in the technically challenging and unique medium of encaustic, a medium in which he is now recognized as a master. With strong figurative, still life, and landscape works, Jacques Payette always manages to express the duality of man’s nature, reconciling and contrasting the physical with the metaphysical.
