About the Item

Ellen Day Hale was one of a very small cadre of professional female artists to receive critical recognition during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Her talents and credentials gave her access to institutions few of her female peers could dream of and, in the words of one critic, "she also played a major role as a mentor for a younger generation of aspiring women artists…” Hale began her career as a follower of the moody Barbizon aesthetic and ended it as a convert to Impressionism. She excelled in both painting and printmaking. Hale was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1855. She began studying art in 1873, working with a succession of well-known East coast artists, including: William Rimmer, Helen Knowlton, and William Morris Hunt. She first exhibited work at the Centennial Exposition of 1876, and was soon showing paintings at the Boston Art Club. She began attending the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1878. Like many young, ambitious American artists, Hale journeyed to Paris to round out her education. In 1881, she took drawing classes under Emmanuel Fremiet, and studied with Emile Carolus-Duran and Jean-Jacques Henner. She enrolled in the storied Academie Julian in 1882, where she worked under exacting academic masters like William Adolphe Bouguereau, Rodolphe Julian, and Tony Robert-Fleury. Hale exhibited in both France and England but returned to the United States in 1885. She immediately set about building a reputation in her native country, showing work at the North, Central and South American Exposition in New Orleans in 1885; the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893; and at the Appalachian Exposition of 1910. In addition to these exhibitions, Hale showed work at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, the Guild of Boston Artists, the St. Botolph Club, the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, the National Arts Club, the New York Etching Club, the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Museum, and the Corcoran Gallery. Hale traveled across the United States, visiting the American West on a number of occasions. She visited Canada, Colorado, and during Texas during the late 1870s, and spent much of the 1890s sequestered in California. “San Diego Mission” dates from Hale’s months spent in Raymond Hotel in Pasadena, California. Hale used this base to launch sketching trips to the many crumbling missions in and around Santa Barbara and San Diego. Hale painted until she was in her 80s and died in 1940. Her works can now be found in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Museum of American History, the U.S. Capitol Collection, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
