Large Art Glass Bowl by Michael Bang
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A large art glass bowl by Michael Bang, of undulating circular, spiralling form, blown in clear glass with two swirls of opaque white and red pigment. Scandinavian, late 20th century.
Michael Bang (1942-2013)
Current And Advanced Glassmaking Art
Michael Bang (1942-2013) was the son of Jacob E. Bang, Holmegaard's first
designer. In the 1960s and 1970s, Michael Bang was a designer at the Odense
Glass Factory, but moved with his family to Holmegaard in the 1980s when he
joined the Holmegaard Glass Factory. Here he managed the design of the
mouth-blown lamps in opal-white glass in which the glass factory
specialised.
Michael Bang was quick-witted, fascinating and fun and able to spellbind an
audience when the glass factory organised talks and presentations.
Many of his products have now become collector's items. Holmegaard carries
his vases and flower pot covers in the MB range (1981), the Mandarin lamp...

Bidjar Runner
Located in San Francisco, CA
This exceedingly pleasing Bidjar runner approaches the long and narrow format in a playful and novel manner. During the late 19th century the Kurdish town of Bijar and its surrounding area became a major Persian carpet producing center, weaving a variety of rugs and carpets both small and large. Central medallions were a popular design format used in these carpets. While a variety of all-over designs appear in Bidjar pieces, here a design based on a repeating prominent central medallion is skillfully improvised. Runners were traditionally paired with large carpets so it is likely that this piece was woven as part of a set, of which the central piece was a large medallion carpet. Indeed, khaki panels drawing colorful linked palmettes of the type used in the borders of large Bidjar...

Stunning Early 20th Century Khotan Rug from East Turkestan
Located in San Francisco, CA
Situated along the ancient Silk Roads running between China and Central Asia, Khotan is an oasis city in the region of East Turkestan in what is now Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region in northwest China. Reflecting the geography in which it was woven, this piece blends elements of Central Asian and Chinese design. A central medallion is drawn in the center of an abstract field which actively combines a host of well-spaced floating motifs. Butterflies, shrubs and smaller floral forms are drawn spaciously spanning the area surrounding the medallion and in between two planted pots on either end of the field. Two borders derived from Chinese traditions frame the composition. With their pleasing light palette and spacious drawing, Khotan weavings...

Peking Carpet
Located in San Francisco, CA
During the decades preceding the World War II, several international firms wove rugs in China for the export market. These carpets were generally executed in the Art Deco style of the era and incorporated elements of ‘chinoiserie’ in an array of vibrant colors rather than in traditional Chinese designs, layout, and palette. This bold Chinese carpet is thus a bit of an outlier. Using a classic Chinese blue and ivory palette with a touch of green, bold vegetal tendrils in the style of imperial Ming...
