By William Spratling
Located in Pasadena, CA
A William Spratling Sterling silver Brooch .1933-1939 and 1940-1946, First Design Period; Taxco, Mexico stamped for William Spratling; Others variously stamped: Taxco / 980 / Made in Mexico / Silver / Mexico Provenance: The Collection of Cindy Tietze-Hodosh and Stuart Hodosh William Spratling, (born Sept. 22, 1900, Sonyea, N.Y., U.S.A”died Aug. 8, 1967, near Taxco, Mex.), American designer and architect, who spent more than 30 years in Mexico developing and promoting the silvercraft that made the city of Taxco famous.A graduate of the New York Fine Arts Institute and Auburn University, in Alabama (where he studied architecture), Spratling taught art and architecture at Tulane University, New Orleans, La., for eight years before going to Mexico in 1927. For two years he taught at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City (1927â€â€œ29) and then settled in Taxco, an old silver town (founded in 1528) that had long been in decay. He befriended silver artisans from all over Mexico and began the design of silver jewelry, artwork, tableware, and tea sets, opening his first taller, or workshop, on the Calle Las Delicias in 1933. After World War II his workshop went bankrupt, but he continued his work from a nearby ranch. His example inspired the founding of hundreds of competing workshops.Over the years Spratling also collected archaeological pieces...

William Spratling Signed Sterling Silver Feather of Quetzalcoatal Taxco Bracelet
By William Spratling
Located in Atlanta, GA
A vintage, circa 1940s signed sterling silver bracelet by William Spratling. This design is called Feather of Quetzalcoatl. According to "Spratling Silver: A Field Guide", by Phyllis Goddard, this bracelet was designed during William Spratling's first design period, 1931-1946. But first things first, who is Quetzalcoatl? According to this Wikipedia article, "The name Quetzalcoatl comes from the Nahuatl language and means "Precious serpent" or "Quetzal-feathered Serpent". In the 17th century, Ixtlilxóchitl, a descendant of Aztec royalty and historian of the Nahua people, wrote, "Quetzalcoatl, in its literal sense, means 'serpent of precious feathers' but in the allegorical sense, 'wisest of men'."" Ah! So that must be why Spratling called this design 'Feather of Quetzalcoatl! But hang on there, how did Spratling come to learn about Quetzalcoatl? Well according to the website Elisa Rolle, "When lecturing at the National University of Mexico's Summer School in 1926-1928, Spratling quickly integrated himself into the Mexican art scene and became a friend and a strong proponent of the work of muralist Diego Rivera, for whom he organized an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Using money received from commissions he organized for Rivera, Spratling bought a home in Taxco, Mexico in 1928, where he began work on a book, Little Mexico, about this small mountain town. Spratling was gay, but most accounts of his life mention this only indirectly if at all. Spratling amassed a large collection of Pre-Columbian figurines...
