Austrian Jugendstil Patinated bronze vase designed by Gustav Gurschner manufactured by K.K. Kunst-Erzgiesserei circa 1906
In the period around 1900, Austria experiences a change in arts and crafts. Artistic impulses from Great Britain become apparent and ornamentation influenced by Celtic culture starts appearing on decoratively designed utilitarian objects. Around 1906, Gustav Gurschner designs numerous vessels, which he skillfully decorates with symbolic or nature-related ornaments. GUSTAV GURSCHNER (Austrian, 1873-1970), a sculptor, attended the School of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1888. Working under several artists, his time in Paris in 1897 proved to be most influential with regards to his stylistic development. He embraced Art Nouveau, or Jugendstil, as it was known in Austria. Part of the avant-garde movement, he participated in the inaugural exhibition of the Vienna Secession in 1898, maintaining close ties with those who later broke away to form the Weiner Werkstatte. From 1904-1908, he was a member of the Austrian group, Hagenbund. In addition to creating sculpted works including large-scale commemorative pieces and commissioned works by Emperor Franz-Josef, Gurschner created medals and was quite well known for his Art Nouveau bronze and glass lamps. Examples of his work are found in the Berg-Isel Museum in Innsbruck and the Musée Galliera in Paris.

Bronze Art Nouveau Figural Candelabrum by Gustav Gurschner
By Gustave Gurschner
Located in New York, NY
A polychrome bronze Art Nouveau figural candelabrum by Gustav Gurschner. A young woman with brown hair, dressed in a long flowing green skirt, with her breasts exposed, holds a seed capsule in each arm, into which a candle can be inserted. Gurschner displayed his work through the Viennese Secession Group gaining him much acclaim. His depiction of bare breasted women largely survives any stricture in that they have a quiet dignity and poetic charm that never stoops to vulgarization. The woman holds in each arm a lotus flower seed capsule. The size of the capsules relative to her body makes her seem a flower fairy or spirit. A candle would be placed on each capsule, illuminating the dinner table with spectacular charm, circa 1902-1904.
In the lead up to World War I, Germany was swept by a wave of artistic nationalism. After spending most of the 19th century dominated by French influence, German artists desired a return to tradition. Integral to German tradition was the vibrant color of Late Medieval wooden sculpture...
