Jane Bloodgood-Abrams Art

American

Jane Bloodgood-Abrams is largely celebrated for her awe-inspiring landscapes influenced by Hudson River School painters, Frederic Church and Thomas Cole. Bloodgood-Abrams has become one of the area’s most celebrated artists, gracing viewers with her compositions of sky, river and earth. Being less concerned with documenting specific scenes, Bloodgood-Abrams is focused on capturing nature’s essence, “the deeply profound moments, where there is a connection to a vital energy.” Her process begins with being in nature, where she allows the emotional energy of the landscape to filter through her psyche. The memory is then translated onto canvas after being worked over some time with layers of paint that is applied, wiped away and reworked. The result is a radiantly dramatic remembrance of Bloodgood-Abram’s encounter with “something beyond everyday life." The artist’s final hope is for these images to evoke remembrances within the viewer's relationship with nature. She was born in Queens, New York. She received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the College of Saint Rose in Albany, in 1985. Three years later, she earned a Master’s of Fine Arts at the State University of New York in New Paltz. Now she paints in the Hudson River Valley and the Berkshires.

By George Herbert McCord
Located in New York, NY
"Seascape," by Hudson River School artist George Herbert McCord (1848-1909) is oil on canvas and measures 18.07 x 30.13 inches. The work which comes from a private collection in Birmingham, Alabama is signed “G.H. McCord A.N.A.” at the lower left. The work is framed in a beautiful, period appropriate frame, and ready to hang. A member of the second generation of Hudson River School painters, George Herbert McCord is known for his atmospheric landscape and marine paintings which capture a variety of locales and are executed in a variety of media—including oil, pastel, and watercolor. McCord was born in 1848 in New York City, where he lived and worked his entire life. After 1883, he kept an additional studio in Morristown, NJ. McCord traveled throughout North America, painting in the Berkshire, Adirondack and Laurentian mountain ranges, the Hudson River Valley, the Coast of New England, the Upper Mississippi, and Florida, which had become popular among Eastern vacationers. He was among a select group of artists commissioned by the Santa Fe Railroad to paint the Grand Canyon, and also participated in a special painting excursion to the Erie Canal. His travels in Europe were equally expansive, taking him to England, Scotland (having been commissioned by Andrew Carnegie to paint the scenery around his castle there), France, the Netherlands, and Italy. McCord was well-educated, having attended Claverack College amidst the Catskills in Claverack, NY, which provided instruction in classical, French, German, English, music, painting, military, commercial, telegraphic and agricultural studies. He also studied with the accomplished painter and inventor of Morse code, Samuel F.B. Morse, and with the Scottishborn landscape painter, James Fairman. McCord was active in numerous art clubs and institutions in New York, including the National Academy of Design, which elected him an Associate member in 1880, the American Watercolor Society, the Brooklyn Art...

A painter, sculptor, writer, and teacher, John Weir was a highly talented man whose painting was overshadowed by his father, Robert Weir, the long-time West Point Academy drawing teacher, and his brother, J Alden Weir, well-known impressionist painter. His distinguished reputation was primarily based on his accomplishments as a teacher and administrator. For many years, from 1869 to 1913, John Weir was the Director of the Yale University School of Fine Arts. He was also a commissioner of the art exhibition at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Weir was born at West Point, New York, and by age 20, had a studio in New York City in the Tenth Street Studio Building, the first building in America dedicated to art studios, and there he associated with many leading painters of the day. He earned attention early in his career for paintings of industrial scenes...

Bloodgood is largely celebrated for her awe-inspiring landscapes influenced by Hudson River School painters, Frederic Church and Thomas Cole. This painting is a perfect example of Bloodgood's aesthetic. The work features large billowy clouds, warmly lit by the evening sun. Subtle shades of blue, yellow and pink weave together to create depth and folds in the cloud's form against a pale blue sky. Whether a soft tonal moonscape or a dramatic aerial view at sunset, the artist aims to express the pervading light and atmosphere of the Hudson Valley. Paint is applied with an academic approach, with a realistic representation of the landscape and little to no texture built upon the surface. Jane Bloodgood favors high vantage points that offer views of billowing clouds and the Hudson Valley terrain. Her paintings transcend the literal to illustrate nature’s spiritual and emotional essence. Works on canvas and panel are rendered with many layers of oil that are applied, wiped away and reapplied. Epic sunsets, golden fall foliage and luminous skies are observations that have become iconic mainstays of her compositions. About the work: Painter Jane Bloodgood-Abrams has become one of the area’s most celebrated artists, gracing viewers with her compositions of sky, river, and earth.
