A powerful and dramatic pair of Italian neoclassical carved and gilt wood mythical animal figures on faux painted bases, mid 19th century or earlier, Italy.
The fantastic beasts are well carved, with dramatic wings that follow the sensuous curve of the neck, and a sinuous body ends in an eel-like tail gracefully curled in upon itself. The bearded heads feature a flattened snout with sharp teeth and a lolling tongue, and pointed horse ears and mane. The long forelegs stretched out in front of them and ending in pawed and clawed feet.
The beasts have characteristics of several different mythical animals, making them hard to positively identify. The most likely candidates would be dragons, hippocampi, or chimeras.
The beasts are unfinished to the back, indicating they were originally part of a relief decoration, possibly from a mirror. They have now been mounted to wooden bases faux painted to imitate porphyry.
They would make perfect bookends or mantle sculptures.

A bold and unusual large 18.5" diameter Japanese gilt ground Imari porcelain charger featuring the Rokkasen, the Six Immortal Poets, Meiji Period, circa 1900, Japan.
The impressive charger features a striking image of the Six Immortal Poets, known as the Rakkasen, seated in fenced pavilion within a lush garden setting and surrounded by numerous books and scrolls. Gnarled pine trees and and branches laden with plum blossoms tower overhead, while chrysanthemum and massive peonies bloom among rocky outcrops.
The scene is unexpectedly and masterfully executed as if on a byobu, a traditional Japanese six panel folding screen. The screen is opened in a dramatic manner, slightly akimbo, almost jumping off the dish, reminiscent of the "screens within screens" genre that developed during the Edo Period. Despite the folds and changes in perspective, the painting remains harmonious and lyrical, with the fully gilt ground adding a sense of warmth and sumptuousness.
The screen is bordered with a geometric bands in the shippo pattern. The shippo pattern features interlocking circles, and symbolizes the Seven Treasures. The shippo pattern on a larger scale serves at the background fo the rest of the charger.

The large document box, ryoshibako, of tall, rectangular shape with rounded corners, and fitted with an inrobuta (flush-fitting) cover with beveled edges. The exterior of this exquisite box is decorated all over with fifteen different raised reserves shaped as uchiwa (paddle) fans against a lush and intricate krikane ground imitating shagreen.
The uchiwa shaped reserves all of takamaki-e, and exquisitely painted with designs of animals, flowers, and landscapes in silver, gold, maki-e, hiramaki-e, and takamaki-e, with kirikane, nashiji, and polychrome embellishments, upon gold lacquer fudame grounds.
The interior of the lid is nothing short of spectacular, featuring a large design of a magnificent and beautifully detailed rooster and hen with chicks gathered around a lazy stream. Large stalks of chrysanthemum bloom behind them. All against an ethereal nashiji ground.
The cover of the box features five reserves:

A charming and mischievous pair of Japanese carved, gilt and painted komainu, often mistaken for foo dogs or foo lions, Showa Period, 1920's, Japan.
The two komainu, or guardian lions, are portrayed seated upon their haunches, heads slightly turned. The two beasts are well carved, with wonderful musculature, flowing manes, and bushy tails. Their faces a mix of ferocious and comical. The eyes of reverse painted glass with gilt highlights.
One is a true komainu, (lion-dog), with a horn on its head, and its mouth closed. The other is a shishi, (lion), with its mouth open, and no horn. The komainu sports a mane and tail pigmented blue with gilt highlights. The shishi sports a mane and tail pigmented green with gilt highlights. Both figures richly gilt in gold lacquer.
