Bronze Buffalo-Headed Deity Yamantaka with Consort Vajravetali 2-Piece Statue

About the Item

A Sino-Tibetan bronze Yamantaka (Sanskrit: Vajrabhairav) with 3 buffalo-head faces and Medusa-like dreadlocks, and 10 arms, holding weapons and objects in every hand as he furiously embraces his consort, Vajravetali, who wears the 5 pointed crown, has her right leg extended and her left leg wrapped around her partner. They stand on corpses above a lotus base. Weapons include a trident, a sword, a rope, a bow and an arrow, as well as other objects including a head grasped by the hair. Yamantaka's head is decorated with sculls and he is clothed in a large dead cat with its face on Yamantaka's buttocks and a chain of heads beneath Vajravetali's buttocks. Each wrist and ankle has a beaded bracelet. Genitalia is visible from the underside. This is the tantric wrathful deity. Modern understanding of the symbolism makes it clear that Yamantaka is a wrathful but compassionate deity, whose terrible power is turned against obstacles, especially anger, hate and death. Bronze has gold patina accents. Underside of base with incised quatrefoil flori-form petal visvavajra mark surrounding a double circle with a dot in the middle. No damage or repairs. Scratches and ribbing to patina throughout indicative of age and use. Yamantaka's head is loose and sculpture is designed to be removable from the base. Measures: Height 7 inches, width 6 inches, depth 3 inches. Weighs 5 pounds.
