Fine English Vintage Lutyens Bench Made in Teak

About the Item

This bench, one of many items designed by the British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, is made in the traditional wood teak in England and is constructed with dowels and pegs just the way his first pieces were completed. Purchased in England by the former own in 1950 for his upstate New York weekend home this bench is in great shape and has a lovely old mellow silver color with some slight mossy patches growing from years of exposure to the weather at this fine country home. Lutyens is well-known as a major architect of England's country house movement in the late 19th and early 20th century. His fame was mostly due to the publication created by Edward Hudson called Country Life. Hudson commissioned Lutyens to do a number of houses for him over the course of his life. Lutyens also did many public commissions for churches, government buildings, Queen Mary's famous Doll House and most notably that section of Delhi call New Delhi used as the center of the government for India. Through out his time working in India he created a style that adapted older styles and forms to a modern and contemporary way of life. Born in London he attended the South Kensington School for architecture from 1885 to 1887. In 1888 he established his own practice and worked throughout his long life designing besides homes, churches, libraries, public buildings, gardens and follies as well as site specific furniture and garden accessories for his clients such as his famous design for this bench.

Wear consistent with age and use. This bench has been lovingly housed for over 64 years by one owner. A small portion of one back leg has broken off , been repaired and is structurally intact and solid.
