Important Art Deco Ceramic Bowl with Trumpet Shell by Linn L. Phelan
About the Item
In 1942, two years before becoming the founding potter at the School for American craftsmen at Dartmouth College in 1944 and four years before joining the famed ceramic program at Alfred University, Linn Phelan created this important bowl at the Linnwood Pottery which he founded in Saco, Maine. Phelan was an enormously important figure in ceramic art, teaching a number of artists who went on to considerable fame, such as Betty Woodman, and Charles Loloma, the noted Hopi jeweler. This bowl also shows the influence of other American leaders in ceramic arts, such as Henry Varnum Poor.
