Pair of Silvered-Walnut Mirrored Screens by Phillip Lloyd Powell, 2000

About the Item

A pair of three-panel Classic screens by Phillip Lloyd Powell, possibly the last pair he ever made. Powell, a consummate Studio Artisan, made each piece of his by hand, working alone or with an assistant. The design motif for these screens was developed in the mid-1960s and adapted to many pieces including doors, cabinets, dressers, and headboards. Each panel was hand-carved by Powell from American black walnut. The "silver" was then applied over red ground. The silver is actually aluminum leaf to give a super bright "pop" effect, as these mirror the era they were designed in. The metal leaf was laid over a ground of either bright red or turquoise blue. These screens are silver over red ground. The panels are piano-hinged with polished steel. The backs of this pair are in black felt. Possibly 20 pairs of these screens are known to have been made.  In excellent condition. Dimensions: Each panel: 86.75" x 17" x 1.25".
