Late 19th Century Art Nouveau Bronze Vase by Marcel Debut

About the Item

Large, bronze amphora vase with green, brown, and yellow patination. The front of the paunch is decorated with a naiad, lying on waves and surrounded by aquatic plants. On the other side of the vase, a cupid, seen from behind, is climbing the paunch, hanging on to the descending branches. The abundant water vegetation partially hides the two inscriptions on the vase: Je m’arrache (I’m leaving) and Je meurs (I’m dying). The small handles are reminiscent of the movement of waves. In Greek mythology, naiads were fresh water nymphs who lived in rivers, springs, and fountains and they had their own religious followers. They are sometimes mentioned as daughters of Zeus, river gods, or Neptune, and are sometimes counted among the priestesses of Dionysus. Naiads are usually represented as young and beautiful with bare arms and legs, resting on a water pitcher or holding a shell and pearls in their hands that accentuates the simplicity of their adornment. They are crowned with simple roses or water plants and have long hair that flows over their shoulders. Signed on the base: Marcel Debut. circa 1900. Dimensions: L 11.4 cm, W 9.8 in, H 23 in. Dimensions: L 29 cm, W 25 cm, H 59 cm. Marcel Debut (Paris, 1865-1933), a painter and sculptor, was raised by his father, Didier Debut, and then by Thomas and Chapu at the Ecole des beaux-arts in the sculpture department. He received honorable mention from the Artistes Français, and beginning in 1883, he displayed his plaster statuettes at the Paris Salon. His exposed works included Sommelier du XVe siecle (15th century Wine Waiter) (1889), Petit Pecheur au harpon (Little Harpoon Fisherman) (1893), Acte´on (Actaeon) (1897), Le Genie des arts (The Genius of the Arts) (1898), the bronze Watteau (1890), and a vase featuring Perseus and Andromeda (1896).
