An Italian Patinated Plaster Horse. Inscribed: Monti

Modeled, head aloft, in a walking pose, with a braided mane and flowing tail, on a rectangular molded edge plinth with concave sides.

Raffaelle Monti (1818 - 1881), the son of the Milanese sculptor Gaetano Matteo Monti, studied in Vienna and in 1848 settled in London where he was soon exhibiting at the Royal Academy. Works by Monti are in the Wallace Collection, Chatsworth House and the Victoria and Albert Museum. A powerful equestrian sculpture of the 3rd Marquis of Londonderry by Monti was placed in Market Square, Durham, in 1861.
