About the Item

Okimono or sculpture in the form of a stylized, modernist ostrich. Of cast and patinated bronze. Signed on the back with a chiseled signature by the artist: Kanji (Suzuki Kanji, the go or art name of Suzuki Shin’ichi, Suzuki Morihisa XIV, 1919 – 1982). Showa 30 or 1955. With a paulownia wood storage box. Titled: Bokyo or Dreaming of Home, This piece was made for exhibition at the Nitten art exhibition in 1955, and it is illustrated in the Nittenshi, volume 18, page 510, number 181. Suzuki Kanji was born to a lineage of kettle casters in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture. In 1942, he graduated from the metal casting department at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music). A student of Naito Haruji, he was hired by the University following the end of the Pacific War in 1946, becoming assistant professor two years later, associate professor in 1967, and full professor in 1973. Kanji first exhibited at the national exhibitions in 1946 at the Nitten, where he continued to show his work throughout his artistic career. For another example of his work, c.f. Selected Masterpieces from The University Art Museum, Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, pages 206 – 207, number 87. This ostrich looks at us with an expression at once wistful and comical. The charming nuance reflects the good humored optimism with which artists looked at the world during the years between the end of the Pacific War in 1946 and the landmark opening of the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. Suzuki Kanji cast this wonderful, blinking creature on the large scale increasingly favored for exhibition sculpture during the era. After nearly sixty years, his portrait of an exotic bird still speaks with the stylish modernism of mid century Japan.
