Late 19th Century Varied Red and Blue Lesghi Star Kuba Rug

About the Item

The iconic star design of this South Caucasian long rug is named for the Lezgian people of northern Azerbaijan and southern Daghestan, an area where many of these pieces were woven. This Kuba piece, however, originates from further south and speaks to the appeal of the design throughout the Caucasus. Indeed, this rendition is particularly well done. While a definite color rotation moves throughout the field, no two of these five stars in boxes is exactly the same. Subtle individualizations in color and size provide for a very pleasing composition. The piece is framed by a finely and narrowly drawn "leaf and wine-glass" border while minor borders composed of smaller boxed ornament provide a variation in scale of the main theme of the field.
