Early 19th Century Blue Tibetan Rug with Stylized Peonies

About the Item

This evocative Tibetan khaden or sleeping rug, draws large stylized peonies inspired by Chinese textile design of the Ming and Ching dynasties against a transplendent indigo field. While a repeat design is used, the weaver has thoughtfully and artfully planned its configuration drawing rows of half and quartered flowers at either end. Floating against the field, four fully formed blossoms and two half blossoms painted with sky blues and modulated greens flank a central flower, which through incorporating the deep indigo color of the field, forms a distinct liminal focal point incorporating both foreground and background. The result is a highly compelling composition executed in plush and highly tactile Himalayan wool. Collection of Lucille A. Lamkin.
