Late 19th Century Red Turkish Karapinar Prayer Rug

About the Item

This Anatolian prayer rug is a tactile sensation. Woven with thick but exceedingly soft wool, darker background colors such as ox-blood reds and contrasting forest greens are punctuated by intense highlights of medium blues and rose. This distinctive palette is characteristic of rugs from the Karaman / Karipinar area south of Konya. The mihrab is drawn with a Classic Anatolian village ram's horn design while the spandrels are embellished with both bold geometricized ornament as well as smaller more delicately drawn carnations. Collection of Lucille A. Lamkin.
