Louis XIV Style Giltwood Armchair, France c.1875, Freshly Upholstered. The handsome and stately armchair embodies the purpose of furniture created during the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715). At this time the King of France was considered divine and everything that surrounded him was chosen to reflect his radiance and glory. This included the royal palace of Versailles as well as all the furnishings designed and created for its interiors. Please look at the legs on this chair as their distinctive shape, a tapered square finished on all four sides, is a key element of Louis XIV style design. Another aspect is that the carved and incised designs seen on the surface of the chair frame appear on all four sides so this chair is easily able to be placed in an open room arrangement as it possesses an appeal when viewed from any direction. The depth of the symmetrical designs seen on the arm supports as well as the vertical sides of the legs show up very clearly even in a room illumintaed with a soft level of light. Originally of course a chair like this was in a room lit only by firelight and candlelight so choosing to have a gilded surface and deeply carved decoration was necessary in order to see the chair clearly. Even the gentle curve of the arms is repeated in the curve seen in the stretcher that connects the four legs beneath the seat. The repetition of design details plays an important role in creating the chair's powerful presence. This chair has been freshly upholstered in two super fabrics from France with the front fabric being a subtly woven design set in contrast to the overscale pattern on the back. The chair also features hand applied nail head trim to give a complete finished look.
