Jindrich Halabala
Thanks to design lovers’ enthusiasm for Art Deco and mid-century modern furniture, and the increasingly competitive market for pieces by more famous creators, 20th-century Czech designers are making their way back onto the international stage. Foremost among these talents is Jindrich Halabala.
Halabala was a cabinetmaker’s son whose training was almost wholly focused on woodwork, first at a state-run vocational school for woodworking in Valašské Meziříčí and later at UP Závody in Brno, where he ultimately became chief designer. His curvaceous bentwood H chairs, such as the H269 and H237, and stylized ottomans have become classics, while his 1930s and 1940s sofas, tables and storage cabinets, with their sweeping curves, stylized geometry and dark, richly grained wood, embody the best of Art Deco furniture design, a style that was brought to worldwide attention at an exhibition in Paris in 1925.
Some see Halabala's work as the segue between early 1900s Czech Cubism and the modern style that dominated the mid-century.

$6,900 Sale Price / set36% Off - Pair of Socialist Mid-Century Lounge Chairs With Boucle UpholsteryLocated in Chicago, ILThese compact mid-century lounge chairs feature an integrated arms, a comfortably-curved back and solid hardwood legs with brass sabots. They are of Czech origin and date to the Communist era. During that time, modern design mostly copied from Western European, particularly Italian, models. High communist party officials, intellectuals and others in elite circles were free to travel and purchase limited quantities of luxury goods. They had a taste for the new styles and wanted to model progressive values in design and culture. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, socialist furnishings lost prestige and were temporarily forgotten. Today they are sought after for their design and for their unique historical value. $6,900 Sale Price29% Off - Rare Pair of 1950's Modern Anglo-Indian Arm ChairsLocated in Chicago, ILThese Anglo-Indian lounge chairs date to the early 1950's and were made in the Mid-Century style. During the British Colonial period and in the two decades after independence, much Indian furniture was made following British or European styles. However, these "Indian Modern" pieces were original designs and simpler and sturdier than their European counterparts. Exquisite native hardwood were used, such as Teak and Rosewood and woven rattan was substituted for upholstery, which grew musty in the humid Indian climate. Lines and details were simple. Over time, Indian craft became very sophisticated and design became more and more creative. Whether the vintage furniture...Category
