Set of 6 Painted Wooden Chairs from Italy

A sgabello is an Italian chair that originated in the Renaissance. Originally designed to be displayed in a hallway (like a French side chair), sgabello were typically highly carved with some sort of familial crest or coat of arms incorporated into the décor. They were purely decorative, as the backrests were elaborately carved with protuberances and bulging motifs; comfort was not a primary concern. Hand-carved from walnut in Italy, circa 1870, our Renaissance style sgabello has recently been bleached, allowing the carvings to gain further prominence. The shaped seat has quarter round molding adorned with a series of niches that have been filled with trefoil leaves. Additional foliage has been shallowly incised to the top of the seat, with sprawling rinceaux surrounding a potted plant. Hand-carved in Florence, Italy, this pair of wall mirrors have been surrounded by giltwood carvings on top of painted boiserie panels. The panels, which feature a column of crenellation along each edge, have been painted in a polychrome gray-green. Both the entablature and the plinth have several layers of molding, some with gilt embellishments. In the center of each panel is a symmetrically shaped mirror with a giltwood border. Above the mirror is a lovely volute margent that spans the entire width of the glass. Two similar, smaller margents fill the canted corners at the bottom of the mirror. A beautiful pair of mirrors with subtle carvings, they can be hung directly onto a wall or inset architecturally, in the style of boiserie paneling.

This large pair of Italian square plates are both marked on the back, and the hand painting on the front of each plate depicts perhaps a family’s coat of arms. You can see they are hand painted by the slight variations in image depictions. The colors are gold, yellows, blues, and rusts on a pure white ground.
