Lacquered Green Mastercraft Credenza with Greek Key Motif, USA, c1970/75

For many years, Grand Rapids, Michigan, was the centre of fine furniture production in the US and hundreds of furniture companies called it home. Among the quality makers was the Doezema Furniture Company, established in 1929 at the beginning of the Great Depression by brothers John and Riner Doezema.

After World War II, Riners two sons, Charles and William, returned from military service and, with their father, left Doezema Furniture to found Mastercraft Furniture in 1945.

In 1974, the Doezemas sold Mastercraft to Baker Furniture Company although they continued to manage it into the early 1980s, when Baker absorbed Mastercraft into the parent company.

William Doezema created many of the designs for Mastercraft, with extensive use of exotic veneers and metal in the furniture, always maintaining the Mastercraft tradition of impeccable quality.
