There is no mistaking the style and sophisticated design of this exquisite English antique Victorian solid mahogany dining set, Circa 1860 in date. It comprises an extending dining table and matching set of six chairs. This set will stand out in your dining room and become a key piece in your furnishing collection. The fabulous table is round and becomes oval when you add the original leaf. This leaf can be added or removed to suit the occasion. It stands on it's exquisitely carved four legged cabriole base and each leg terminates in it's original recessed brass and porcelain castor. The beautiful and comfortable set of six English antique mid Victorian flame mahogany dining chairs are also circa 1860 in date. They have beautiful hand carved decoration, the cabriole front legs terminate in brass cup castors, and the stuff over seats and backs have been beautifully upholstered in an elegant fabric. This striking set has been hand-crafted from solid Cuban mahogany of the highest quality, and it has a beautiful grain and a rich patina. Whatever the function of this gorgeous dining set, it will make a profound impression on your dinner guests or clients and will receive the maximum amount of attention wherever it is placed. Mahogany has been used for centuries in ship building, house building, furniture making etc and is the core structure of just about every 19th century vanity box, dressing case or jewellery box. It became more of a Victorian trend to dress Mahogany with these decorative veneers, such as Rosewood, Kingwood, Burr Walnut and Coromandel, so that the actual Mahogany was almost hidden from view. Mahogany itself is a rich reddish brown wood that can range from being plain in appearance to something that is so vibrant, figured and almost three dimensional in effect. Although Mahogany was most often used in its solid form, it also provided some beautifully figured varieties of veneer like ‘Flame’ Mahogany and ‘Fiddleback’ Mahogany (named after its preferred use in the manufacture of fine musical instruments). Cuban Mahogany was so sought after, that by the late 1850”²s, this particular variety became all but extinct. Cuban Mahogany Swietenia mahagoni, the "Wood of Kings". Swietenia mahagoni is the wood that planked the ships of the Spanish Armada. Thomas Sheraton, Thomas Chippendale, and Duncan Phyfe chose Cuban Mahogany for their furniture. It has been among the most prized and valuable timbers since the late 16th century.. As its reputation grew, the supply of wood shrank. As timber harvest methods became more sophisticated, the inaccessible trees became lumber. By the mid 1700's it was becoming scarce. By the mid 1800's good lumber was becoming rare. By the late 1800's the species had been logged into genetic impoverishment and commercial extinction.
