ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I am interested in creating an environment in which the viewer desires to become engaged. Through color, the subtext of layered images and drawing I hope to develop a realm of vision that mirrors the imagery of my mind: plant life, natural elements and pattern all represent the beginning of the growth of thought- a marker with which to begin to contemplate a larger experience. It is through working that I am able to approach this expanded state of mind; a reflection of that experience is recorded in the paint.
My current work is based on the idea of a lantern or lamp. The lanterns etched into the paint or cast in resin and lit developed out of an effort to eliminate fear and negativity in my mind and resonated on a number of levels throughout the creative process. They represent in a tangible way the idea that in order to banish darkness one must create light and in so doing point toward a higher state of consciousness. A bright lamp will illuminate the dark; a thousand bright lamps of a thousand souls could collectively create an extraordinary light. Perhaps by making the lanterns I am striving for something greater than my own identity and I am reminded of the human potential for good.
“That lamp of hope on high, which time nor chance nor change may not extinguish…”
