19th Century Italian Oil Painting in the Manner of Antonio Panini

About the Item

This fine old painting is a typical pastiche of the kind popular throughout Italy and the world in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The most commonly associated artist who really made the largest name for himself creating these kinds of paintings was Antonio Panini in the late 18th century. He had a thriving studio with many apprentices producing works and travel extensively to promote himself and the studio's production work. Done not as a specific place but as an idea of the bucolic life found among the ruins of the storied ancients of Roman. This idea was made most important by the idea of the grand tour as a way of the final educational point of a young lady or gentleman's life. The painting is composed of a number of classical ruins and elements ravaged by time and worn and root-bound set within a setting of trees, gardens and an abundant pastoral setting. Scattered across the setting are people viewing and inspecting the ruins dressed in colorful and interesting period costumes. A nice point with this painting is that it is stretched on a hand made stretcher and that it is framed in a nice old all carved wood frame which has been routed out after its initial making to specifically house this painting. The pair seem to have been put together in the late 20's and the back has a number of" made in Italy "rubber stamps . This form of marking is common on objects imported to this country during the first two decades of the 20th century even antiques and was designed to follow the costumes laws requiring a country or origin of manufacture to be clearly displayed. The painting has been repaired in two small places recently but as well has a small very old repair. It is entirely possible that the painting is late 18th century from the canvas material and style in which it is painted.. However, we are attributing this painting to the 19th and was exported to this country during the early 20th century and framed at its time of export. Condition Disclosure: While we do our best to carefully inspect and give a full report on the condition of any item we sell, pointing out any repairs or alterations that may have been done to the best of our knowledge, as is the case with any antique and vintage item, there is a possibility that at some point in the life of the piece that there may have been damaged which has been professionally repaired and as such a repair undetectable, it is therefore impossible for us to disclose... we recommend that you also read and agree to the 1st dibs user agreement, particularly sections 9,13,15,18,19 and 27
