Walking Cane With Frogs and Lizards USA19th century Circa 1860-70 carved walking cane showing two green spotted snakes rising from the base of the cane intertwining until they meet the tails of two green lizards, with the snakes holding the tails of the lizards, giving the appearance that they are ready to devour them. Two pairs of green frogs sit on the upper section of the staff, which terminates in a suppressed ball pommel. The carving is in deep relief, almost fully three dimensional and showing 'platform ears' on which the frogs and lizards sit. The background of the cane's shaft is painted to imitate tiger maple and has a tin cap covering the tip. Figural canes with snake decoration are widely known in Euro American, Native American and African American folk traditions and the motifs suggest that this cane is most likely of Southern origin.
