Jean Honore Fragonard under the advice of Francois Boucher entered the Atelier de Chardin. In 1752 he was awarded the grand prix of Rome. His paintings were very well received at the Salon in Paris and the King of France himself purchased some of his works.
Better than Boucher, Fragonard is the painter considered by some to be the most decorative and decadent of the 18th Century. Amusement played a greater role in Fragonard’s oeuvre than that of his contemporaries. Many of his paintings constitute a celebration of adolescent pleasure. He was the artist of charm. He was also attentive to teeming foliage and the silhouette of forms against the sky.
