A Decorative Tibetan Book Cover with Double Diamond Motif Tibet14th century A single-sided “book cover” for a precious text or “pecha” (rectangular loose-leaved pages stacked and printed on both sides). Book covers for such special volumes were often made of ceremonially decorated wood, which was carved, gilt, and/or painted with ritual iconic motifs. This example features a shallow, gilt relief, double diamond design with two inner rondels, bordered by decorative scrollwork, all in gold paint on a red ground with jewel-like spots of green. As is sometimes the case, one end of the book cover is also carved and gilded. The back is unpainted.
