Late 19th Century Hand Carved Odd Fellows Gavel
About the Item
Carved symbols include the all-seeing eye of God, a heart-in-hand (symbolic of charity), and a three link chain (symbolic of friendship, love and truth).
The International Order of Odd Fellows is a fraternal organization advocating fellowship with all its members who take Friendship, Love, and Truth as basic guidelines. The Odd Fellows organization formed in England sometime during the 18th century, when it was rather 'odd' to follow the noble values of benevolence, charity, and fraternalism. The IOOF was founded in Baltimore in 1819.
