About the Item

It's become more and more difficult to find/source these brilliantly carved old French crucifix, and particularly these larger solid ivory ones. This is a stunning example of why they are so sought after, as you can see in the magnificently carved anatomical sketch of a suffering Christ on the cross. Normally finding one that is more than 5 or 6 inches head to toe is nearly impossible, so you'll know that for us to find one that is 8 1/2" from crown of thorns to his toes and in such beautifully conserved condition, as well, is a thrill. With it still in the original carved and d'or or 'dore - gold gilded' frame, it's just a stunning museum piece. I've seen far lesser carved corpus in the Vatican Museum, the Museum of Notre Dame (each of which have expansive collections of fine old Christ figures, as you can imaging, and display them with breaks, without arms, etc., because they are just superb works of art in any form. With the muscles still in the taut stresses of great agony, and the skeleton and even some veins visible in the carving, though the creamy ivory colored 'skin' of the form, the figure is so lifelike, you can practically feel the pain and emotion of this moment in the crucifixion story, just before he gives in and his body slackens in expiration. This is a favored pose of the famed carvers of Dieppe, France, famous for the almost miraculous carvings in fine natural ivory. We are so pleased to bring this one to our collectors. Very good to excellent condition for age and type. We see some age/shrinkage/drying cracks or hairlines in the material, primarily in the pieces carved as his arms (the arms are always joined at the shoulder - that is not a flaw or break). The veins and sinew of the feet and toes are remarkable - look at our detail photos. And all toes and fingers remain intact save the tips of just 2 fingers (detail photos). His face is full of passion, elegantly so, with amazing treatment to the features and beard. His open mouth and upward turned eyes force us to contemplate the point of exhaustion from pain, and yet the musculature is still tense, alive and fighting against the cross. Miraculous carving!
