About the Item

Large silver salver by William Justis. Hallmarked for 1752 with the initials WI for the maker. The coat of arms engraved on the front are for Jonathan Belcher, Govenor-in-Chief of the province of Nova Scotia and later Governor of the Province of New Jersey under British rule. Jonathan Belcher was the founder in 1746 of Princeton University. There is an engraved dedication on the underside of the salver which reads: 'To y (the) Memory of Cornelius Mason Esq. 1752'. The salver is very heavy and solid and of the highest quality. Jonathan Belcher (1682–1757) was a merchant, businessman, and politician from the Province of Massachusetts Bay during the American colonial period. Belcher served simultaneously for over a decade as colonial governor of the British colonies of New Hampshire (1729–1741) and Massachusetts (1730–1741) and later for ten years as governor of New Jersey (1747–1757). Born into a wealthy Massachusetts merchant family, Belcher attended Harvard College and then entered into the family business and local politics. Belcher was appointed governor of New Jersey in 1747 with support from its Quaker community and promoted the establishment of the College of New Jersey, now Princeton University. He died in office in 1757 and Belchertown, Massachusetts is named for him. The salver weighs 1.105 kgs/35.2 oz of solid sterling silver. William Justis is listed as being active in London between 1751-1755 (London Assay Office), interestingly a William S. Justis (silversmith) born 1801 is listed as being active in Baltimore from the 1830s onwards and possibly a descendant.
