Biography: One of the key figures in New York's East Village art scene in the 1970s and 1980s, Keith Haring (1958 – 1990) developed a unique and distinctly personal vocabulary of bold, graphic icons—barking dogs, flying saucers, winged figures, and a crawling "radiant baby"—which he combined with abstract marks and patterns in densely packed, compositions. Raised in Pennsylvania, Haring briefly attended the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh before relocating to New York City and enrolling in The School of Visual Arts. In New York, he was swept up in the energy and spirit of the thriving alternative art community that was developing in the downtown streets, the subways and dance halls. Also drawn to the interactive nature of Christo’s installations and how art and life intersected in Andy Warhol’s work, Haring devoted his career to creating public art that could be enjoyed by art admirers of all ages. Throughout his career, Haring devoted much of his time to public works, which often carried social messages. Between 1982 and 1989, he produced more than 50 public artworks in dozens of cities around the world, many of which were created for charities, hospitals, children’s day care centers and orphanages. His "Crack is Wack" mural (1986) is a landmark along New York’s FDR Drive, and the same year he worked with 900 children to create a mural for the centennial of the Statue of Liberty. Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, and during the last years of his life he used his imagery to speak about his own illness and increase awareness about AIDS. In 1989, he established the Keith Haring Foundation with the intention of providing funding to AIDS organizations and children’s programs, and to expand the audience for his work through exhibitions and image licensing. Keith Haring died of AIDS related complications at the age of 31 on February 16, 1990.

  • Le Perron (The Porch) /// French Impressionist Henri Le Sidaner Garden Landscape
    By Henri Le Sidaner
    Located in Saint Augustine, FL
Artist: Henri Le Sidaner (French, 1862-1939) Title: "Le Perron (The Porch)" Portfolio: Gazette des Beaux-Arts *Issued unsigned, though signed by Sidaner in the plate (printed signature) lower right Year: 1911 Medium: Original Lithograph on soft-cream Simili Japon paper Limited edition: approx. 1,500 Printer: Maison Fortier and Marotte, Paris, France Publisher: Gazette des Beaux-Arts, Paris, France Reference: Sanchez and Seydoux 1911, No. 12 Sheet size: 10.75" x 7.13" Image size: 7.5" x 5.75" Condition: Light toning to sheet. It is otherwise a strong impression in excellent condition Notes: Printed in one color: blue. This lithograph was published by Gazette des Beaux-Arts. The Gazette des Beaux-Arts was a French art review, found in 1859 by Édouard Houssaye, with Charles Blanc as its first chief editor. Assia Visson Rubinstein was chief editor under the direction of George Wildenstein from 1928 until 1960. Her papers, which include all editions of the Gazette from this period, are intact at the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne in Dorigny. The Gazette was a world reference work on art history for nearly 100 years - one other editor in chief, from 1955 to 1987, was Jean Adhémar. It was bought in 1928 by the Wildenstein family, whose last representative was Daniel Wildenstein, its director from 1963 until his death in 2001. The review closed in 2002. Biography: Sidaner, (7 August 1862 – July 1939), an intimist painter, born to a French family in Port Louis, Mauritius. In 1870 he and his family settled in Dunkirk. Le Sidaner received most of his tutelage from the École des Beaux-Arts under the instruction of Alexandre Cabanel but later broke away due to artistic differences. Between 1885 and 1894 Le Sidaner lived the year round at the Etaples art colony and was joined there by his childhood friend Eugène Chigot (1860–1923), who shared his interest in atmospheric light. Later Le Sidaner traveled extensively throughout France. He also visited many cities around the globe, as well as villages throughout Europe. He exhibited at the Salon, the Galeries Georges Petit in Paris and the Goupil Gallery in London, and settled in Gerberoy. Marcel Proust's mention of Le Sidaner's work in his novel In Search of Lost Time confirms its later reputation. In Sodom and Gomorrah...

  • Some Los Angeles Apartments - True, Stated 1st Edition of only 700 Artist Book
    By Ed Ruscha
    Located in New York, NY
Ed Ruscha Some Los Angeles Apartments (Unsigned), 1965 True First Edition Artist Book: Stated Limited Edition of only 700 7 × 5 1/2 inches Unframed A rare and elusive 1960s Artist Book. Makes a terrific gift. This is a TRUE 1965 1st Edition of only 700 stated copies. (NOT to be confused with the second edition in 1970 which was published in a much larger edition of 3000 and NOT to be confused with an eponymous 1990 Whitney Museum publication.) A must have for Ruscha Fans. SOME LOS ANGELES APARTMENTS. Los Angeles: Self-Published, 1965. True First Edition Printed Wrappers with Glassine. Original Artist's Book. This marvelous vintage 1965 48 page book features 34 black and white illustrations and is in surprisingly fine condition. "Some Los Angeles Apartments" is Ed Ruscha's third artist book - a wry yet heartfelt photographic survey of the subtle beauty of the post-war Southern California rental property construction boom. A spectacularly bright, most handsome example of the uncommon 1965 first edition (entry B3 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999" which is also cited on page 141 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", pages 198-201 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 105 of "From Fair to Fine 2", and page 226 of "From Fair to Fine 3") limited to seven hundred unnumbered copies. This is an exceptional example of this important little gem that is often confused with the 1990 Whitney Museum exhibition catalogue of virtually the same title. "In the 1960s, Ed Ruscha more or less reinvented the artist’s book. By turning away from the craftsmanship and luxury status that typified the livre d’artiste in favor of the artistic idea or concept, expressed simply through photographs and text, Ruscha opened the genre to the possibilities of mass-production and distribution. Some Los Angeles Apartments, with its straightforward presentation of modern California domestic buildings, celebrated the vernacular architecture of Southern California." The Getty Museum "....It's perhaps fitting that Ed Ruscha - one of the central figures in late 20th century photography - does not consider himself a photographer. "I think photography is dead as a fine art," he told John Coplans...
