Karen Barton
Crystal Hot Sauce, Oil Painting

2023

About the Item

Artist Comments
"Hot sauce is a condiment some people cannot live without," says artist Karen Barton. The clear glass delicately captures the surrounding light while showcasing its vibrant red content, creating a striking contrast against the pastel blue background. Karen's skillful palette knife techniques add softness to the image of the fiery liquid.

About the Artist
Oil painter Karen Barton creates records of everyday objects through a historical and sentimental lens. With works that feature the ingredients of a PB sandwich or the iconic blue Morton's Salt container, Karen makes a connection through the goods that reach into our homes and possibly to our childhoods. As she explains, "my paintings are of a historical nature. They mostly represent contemporary culture and our current time in history while others are ‘timeless icons.'" Karen collects her subjects at local grocery, hardware, or antique stores where she often attracts curious stares while she intently examines the items. Based in the Pacific Northwest, Karen shares a studio with her artist husband, which she describes as a busy looking place with art supplies and a bright yellow futon with Libby, their beloved studio dog.

  • Sushi Plate, Oil Painting
    By Pat Doherty
    Located in San Francisco, CA

    Artist Comments
An assortment of nigiri and sushi rolls displayed on a white plate with chopsticks, placed on a green oval serving platter. "In creating my paintings, I draw on my experience as a former commercial art director and designer," says artist Pat Doherty. "I take time to balance the elements in my compositions and establish good color relationships between light and shadow."

    About the Artist
Pat Doherty follows in the tradition of Bay Area artists who paint what they love. Her culinary series is a reflection of her surroundings; Pat is a third generation San Franciscan now living in Marin. The Bay Area is the perfect place to find the petit fours and decadent pastries featured in her work "Sweet Choices." Similar in subject matter to Wayne Theibaud's desserts, Pat’s unique style starts with a rich color palette and an angled picture plane to achieve depth. The subjects are often simple, but Pat takes the time to understand them and develop a mastery of light and shadow. The art has a certain humor and light-heartedness as well, especially with her series of dogs and bite-sized confections. Pat's style is inspired by her previous work in the graphic design industry, when she was the art director of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, art director of San Francisco magazine, and senior art director at a private design firm. Pat's work has been featured in American Art Collector magazine, several solo shows, including the Caffe Museo in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, as well as many group shows, including frequent showings at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art.

  • Blue-Green Cubist Cafe
    By Rachel Srinivasan
    Located in San Francisco, CA

    Artist Comments
This painting is a cubist version of recent coffee art I have created. The geometric repeated mokka pattern backed by the green blue hues connote joy and imagination and love of pattern. This piece is on gallery wrapped canvas and the painting continues around the sides. It comes ready to hang.

    About the Artist
For Rachel Srinivasan, an idea is worth putting on a canvas only if it still feels exciting after a few days. Rachel enjoys mulling the idea over in her mind for some time before creating an artwork. She hopes viewers will engage with her work and wonder about the subject matter, shapes and colors. My current work is all about creating a connection between the person on the canvas with the viewer, she explains. She prefers large paintings and sometimes even makes her own canvases. She currently lives in Arizona and enjoys baking rhubarb pies, reading, running and going to art museums.
