Notes:
Provenance: private collection - Oakland, CA. With centerfold as issued. Printed in four colors from four aluminum plates: black, blue, grey, and cream. Comes from the 1972 "Fresh Air School" unbound folio of three lithographs by Sam Francis, Joan Mitchell, and Walasse Ting. These lithographs were created in conjunction with a special exhibition of paintings by the three artists "Fresh Air School" at the Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA which ran from 1972 - 1973. The official catalogue raisonne of Sam Francis' printmaking by Lembark documents this portfolio and each of the artists' contributing lithograph editions.
Biography:
Joan Mitchell (February 12, 1925 - October 30, 1992) was an American "second generation" abstract expressionist painter and printmaker. She was a member of the American abstract expressionist movement, even though much of her career took place in France. Along with Lee Krasner, Grace Hartigan, Helen Frankenthaler, Shirley Jaffe and Sonia Gechtoff, she was one of her era's few female painters to gain critical and public acclaim. Her paintings and editioned prints can be seen in major museums and collections across the United States and Europe.

Joan Mitchell
Joan Mitchell was born in 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, and died in 1992 in Paris, France. She received her BFA and MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois.
Mitchell's paintings and prints have been the subject of solo exhibitions at galleries and museums worldwide including the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.; the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.
Mitchell's numerous awards include the Award for Painting from the French Ministry of Culture. Her work can be found in numerous public collections including the Art Institute of Chicago; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.; the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles, California; the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France; and the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, among others.

It could have a geometry that had a narrative impact.
