Felipe Castaneda

Mexican, b. 1933

The work of celebrated Mexican sculptor Felipe Castañeda represents a harmonious balance of pre-Columbian and modern artistic impulses. His figurative and still-life sculptures have a quiet, contemplative appeal. Working in mediums like marble, onyx and bronze, Castaneda’s female figures explore themes of womanhood, motherhood and fertility.

Castañeda was born in La Paloma, Mexico, in 1933. The area’s abundance of pre-Columbian sites and artifacts no doubt inspired his later work. Interested in art from a young age, Castañeda moved to Mexico City to get closer to the country's artistic scene. He started his studies at La Esmeralda National School of Painting Sculpture and Drawing in 1958, where he discovered a passion for sculpture. Castañeda left school in 1963 and worked at the National Museum of Anthropology and as an assistant to Francisco Zúñiga

Zúñiga was an Expressionist artist known for his paintings and sculptures featuring indigenous women, which undoubtedly informed Castaneda's style. Castañeda developed a sensual aesthetic highlighting the female form and harking back to the clean lines, classical proportions and thoughtful expressions of Greco-Roman sculpture. He held his first solo exhibition in 1970 in Monterrey, Mexico.

Over the course of his long career, Castañeda has exhibited throughout Mexico, the United States and Europe. He has received commissions for public sculptures in his home country as well as in California. His work is held in the permanent collections at the Museum of Art History in Ciudad Juárez and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Castañeda currently lives in Morelia, Mexico.

There he is… out in the distance standing on the cliffs edge, rearing with a colossal power that only a wild stallion exudes… Thrusting his hooves at the setting sun as if to say, “this is MY mountain, MY meadows, and MY heard.” He commands attention, he is dignified, and he is EXQUISITE. We have a marvelous cast metal bronze tone stylized rearing horse standing on a beautiful black marble base to offer to you. Attributed to C. Jere (a.k.a.) Curtis Jere which is not a single artist but is a nom-de-plume for a group of artists working for Artisan House and well known for their phenomenal jewelry, metal sculptures, and collectibles. And this abstract rearing horse is a perfect example of their remarkable pieces!! Modern Geometric Mixed Metal Dimensional Wall Sculptures by C Jere Series of 4
By C. Jeré Artisan House
Located in Topeka, KS
Gorgeous modern series of four geometrical dimensional mixed metal wall sculptures by C. Jere, unsigned but easily documented online. Comprised of steel, brass, and copper. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There are scratches on all 4 sculptures, a ding on one, and we have replaced 2 triangular bent metal pieces. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, late 20th – early 21st century. Oh yeah… it’s hip to be square!! And in this case, that is definitely true!! This is an awesome series of four-square dimensional mixed metal wall sculptures by C. Jere displaying various unique and abstract geometric designs comprised of steel, brass, and copper arranged in the center of each metal square. C. Jere (a.k.a.) Curtis Jere is not a single artist but is a nom-de-plume for a group of artists working for Artisan House and well known for their phenomenal jewelry, metal sculptures, and collectibles. This series of four is a MUST have for any wall that needs a bold statement piece, touch of Modern style, or simply an intriguing, phenomenal piece of artwork! Position them to your preference and change any wall from being bland, to BOOM! They would be wonderful side by side in a row of four however, I envision them stacked one on top of the other in a large square. Maybe over a fireplace, on a wall in a tall entry way, or on a primary wall in your living room. If you’ve been looking for the right touch of Modern or Industrial edge to welcome into your home… you just found it!
